Italy turned on to nuclear power. New plants within 5 years

Berlusconi?s challenge to the scientific, technological and cultural world, last Monday brought us to speak about energy dependence. Yesterday the Government announced that by end of this term, nuclear power plants will be running in Italy. Many readers would like to know more about it. Let?s start with the global energy need.
The IEA (International Energy Agency) states that in the next decade, the need for energy in the world will grow impressively. Indeed where there is energy you can solve problems related to daily life needs and death for starvation disappears. We belong to the privileged group of one billion people who have at their disposal the amount of energy needed for the standard of living we are accustomed of. But there are five and a half billion people who would like to live like us.
Today hundreds of millions of people (the estimated range is between 400 and 800 million) live with a quantity of energy per capita at their disposal identical to the one that our ancestors had during the Stone Age. More than a billion and half people do not know what electricity is.
The so-called alternative sources - sun and wind - are off-market: things for the rich ones and certainly not feasible for people seeking low-cost energy. Coal and biomass could be a way out, however, they produce adverse effects on health. According to the World Bank estimates, the use of coal causes in China alone 300 thousand victims a year. And the use of biomass causes one million and 300 thousand victims. Whereas everyone is terrified by nuclear waste. And on this regard it must be clearly said that the latter can be destroyed. The problem is economic, not technical.
The only source able to meet the exponentially growing request for energy is the peaceful nuclear fire. This formidable scientific discovery, however, has slid in the history of the world with the two enormous tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In fact, with these two tragedies, the demonization of nuclear physics began: one of the most serious cultural mystification of all times. It was this demonization that prevented the development of nuclear power and that made Italy lose a formidable technological leadership in the construction of safe nuclear power plants: we were the best in the world.
The Emperor of Japan brought justice to the demonization of the peaceful nuclear fire. In his speech at the opening ceremony of the World Congress of nuclear physicists, held last year in Tokyo, the Emperor said that the nuclear physics should not be confused with the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Actually, the achievements of nuclear physics - has concluded - can ensure a peaceful future based on the energy freedom. In fact - as witnessed by the oil price higher than ever - we are entering the phase of severe worldwide energy crisis. Crisis from which we can only be saved by the peaceful nuclear fire.
The man who managed to turn on in Chicago ? on December 2nd, 1942 - the first nuclear candle of peace was Enrico Fermi, who will be remembered in history as the main Galilean scientist of the twentieth century. The nation that gave birth to whom was able to turn this formidable new type of fire is now a slave of other nations, such as France, who were able to make the right choices to equip themselves with powerful structures capable of ensuring a strong level of energy independence.
Our country must emerge from the energy dependency status in which it fell. Despite the dismantling of the excellent nuclear facilities that we were able to achieve, it is not true that it takes decades to give Italy powerful nuclear power stations. Let us remember that the implementation of the first nuclear pile above mentioned was achieved after just four years of work, starting from scratch and that is by not even knowing how to ignite that fire.
This fire demonised for more than half a century is a sign of great civilization, as it enables to produce the same amount of energy sparing one million times the destruction of combustible material. Instead of one million kilos, it is just needed one kilo to be destroyed in order to obtain the same amount of energy.
Focusing on the implementation of nuclear power stations, in the short term, means to be on the safe side escaping the status of energy dependency in which we find ourselves. There is therefore the need of a strong political will to add to the many emergencies already addressed, the victory over the energy freedom. What was said yesterday by Minister Scajola on the decisions of the Berlusconi government induces optimism.
