?Only a modern Hercules could straight up the Vatican?
The writer has investigated on the death of John Paul I and tells that he has discovered a network of corruption under John Paul II?s pontificate.
After confirming his Gene Hackman look-alike (?I will tell you a secret: I am Gene Hackman! Many have his autograph, but I did it?, and he laughed slyly), he becomes serious resembling rather the circumspection and sarcasm of David Niven. He carries the image of San Christopher, the Patron Saint of travellers. So he retraced his path with an English surname of very old roots, which he managed to track down to the 13th century. David Yallop has always been fascinated by words (?I have the gift of expression, it comes from my Irish blood, they are very expressive and poetic people?) so much that he is author of comedies and TV drama, has written about unresolved crimes and is considered one of the major writers of investigation stories in the world.
In his book ?In God?s Name?, translated in 30 languages and that sold 6 million copies, he states that John Paul I has been murdered. Afterwards he published ?The Power and the Glory?, an explosive biography on John Paul II, that does not spare criticism and destroys myths.
?We need to clean up the Vatican. Only a modern Hercules could do it?, he said synthetically, while his green eyes twinkled.
NOTICIAS: how did the Church react to the publication of your first book?
DAVID YALLOP: they got angry, they condemned it and said that it was offensive rubbish. Apparently there have been real attacks against all the sources that I had identified, some might have been even transferred from their job places. A journalist of the ?Manchester Guardian?, that was my interpreter in Italy, got his press accreditation withdrawn. If you are correspondent in Rome and you cannot enter the Vatican... you are doomed. He had no responsibility whatsoever for what I have written.
NOTICIAS: did your main sources come from within the Church?
YALLOP: those who had the main information came from the Vatican itself, but not all of them. There has also been reference from the mafia, also some Catholics that got to know that I was investigating wanted to speak with me. They told me: ?We are very upset because the Vatican Bank is allegedly in connection with organised crime?.
NOTICIAS: You are accusing a very powerful organisation. Have you received any lawsuit?
YALLOP: no I have not, not even with ?The Power and the Glory?. They criticise me because, this time on purpose, I have not revealed my sources. I have made use of many extra-Vatican References.
NOTICIAS: you support the idea that John Paul I was murdered, had he become too dangerous for the Church?
YALLOP: indeed, he was not ready to accept the status quo that he inherited, he did not believe into a rich Church. During all the duties that he carried out, including the position of Patriarch of Venice, he avoided any source of wealth that came near him. He desired a poor church, for the needy ones.
NOTICIAS: would we have achieved then the Church that we really needed?
YALLOP: oh yes, but unfortunately he was poisoned after only 33 days. Why did they not kill Wojtyla too? Because he was corrupted. John Paul I wanted to modify the Vatican finance, the internal discipline, evangelisation, ecumenism, he wanted to influence the world peace process. There are documents, and I have mentioned them, that prove how Wojtyla considered his personal duty to make sure that those reforms would not take place.
The crucial proof is that the reports on financial corruption that Albino Luciani was studying when he died, disappeared by the order of Cardinal Jean Villot, the one who was ordered to remove bishop Marcinkus from the presidency of the Vatican Bank. Exactly few hours afterwards, the very healthy John Paul I died.
NOTICIAS: you describe Wojtyla as opportunist, indifferent, backward, all the contrary of the so beloved pope. Is the Vatican machine so powerful to ?build up? a character and support him for years?
YALLOP: they have been doing it for the last 2000 years? (he smiles)
NOTICIAS: according to your opinion, did they start with a revision of his biography?
YALLOP: yes, and that is nothing new. As soon as a man becomes pope, the clergy eliminates or destroys any shadow. It is an immediate beatification.
NOTICIAS: was it the first emendation to support the idea that the Nazis had inserted his name in the black list since he helped the Jews?
YALLOP: yes, it is all fake. He has never saved the life of a single Jew and had worked for the East Chemical Works (former Solvay) that was vital for the Third Reich: all of them had a pass qualifying them as staff assigned to ?objectives of high importance for the war?. During those years his priestly vocation was born.
NOTICIAS: did he not even take part into the fight of the Church against communism in Poland in 50s-60s?
YALLOP: there are only two or three episodes of a strong position taken publicly during the years from 1950 to 1978. This is confirmed by an actual fact. When a position in the dioceses of Krakov became available, the Polish communist regime that should have approved the person in charge, refused three people at first, and then even more. At a certain point a figure of the regime told the Cardinal: ?we?ll carry on refusing everyone until when you will pick Carol Wojtyla?.
Without that consensus, he would have never become Pope. This means that they had a good opinion about him.
NOTICIAS: did Cardinal Wyszynski have a different attitude?
YALLOP: absolutely, he was a brilliant man that I admire very much since he, and not Wojtyla, was for the best part the main responsible for the success of the Solidarnosc syndicate. Wojtyla criticised him, he was already pope when he said: ?this old man does not know what he is doing?. He was a general used to fight the war sitting comfortably on the couch.
NOTICIAS: why did John Paul II refuse to dismiss Marcinkus who was accused of severe financial crimes from the presidentship of the Vatican Bank?
YALLOP: the bank allegedly recycled incomes deriving from illicit activities. Such incomes would be directly available to the Pope, who could employ them at his sole discretion. The Vatican controls an immense secret wealth, that the spokesmen deny or underestimate. It does own more estates than anyone else in the whole planet.
The American Church and the German one are the wealthiest. And if there was a laic aware of the fortune and the financial secrets of the Vatican, this was Roberto Calvi.
NOTICIAS: you have talked to Calvi a few days before he would get killed. Can you tell us something about it?
YALLOP: it was the 9th June 1982. He was tranquil but when I told him that the theme of the book was John Paul I he changed completely. He stammered: ?Who sent you to me? I always pay, always. How do you know Gelli? What do you want??. I told him that I knew Gelli and he got nervous: ?you shall never write this book and do not call me ever again?. Eight days afterwards they found his corpse suspended under a bridge in London. Calvi was ?suicided? by his friends of P2.
NOTICIAS: in Latin America a movement of priests asked for the same reforms that John Paul I desired: a church for the poor ones, the reformation of the Vatican Bank, birth control. Wojtyla supported the alliance with the powerful ones, the right-wing and dictatorships?
YALLOP: When Wojtyla was elected, he did not know much of Latin America. But the Vatican crowd, known as ?the fascists?, was in favour of many right-wing dictatorships. The Pope had warned the clergy ?not to get into politics?. Many priests and nuns were killed for supporting the poor ones; he rejected the Theology of Liberation, he did not even mention it, he claimed that for this topic it was necessary to come to ?pastoral compromises?.
He went out onto the balcony with Videla, with Pinochet, and when Archbishop Romero of El Salvador asked him to demonstrate against abuses in his country, he replied that it was not so serious, that he should have sought dialogue with the military junta. I have documents that prove it. Shortly after that, Romero was assassinated.
NOTICIAS: did he contribute to the fall of communism in Europe together with Ronald Reagan?
YALLOP: This is another myth. He despised communism, but he was not fascinated by capitalism either, he mistrusted the United States and perceived most of the West as decadent and morally inferior to Poland.
NOTICIAS: besides the great media phenomenon of John Paul II, do you think that the faithful do not follow his doctrine on its key matters?
YALLOP: Even at the age of 83, sick and suffering, he made long journeys to attract crowds thanks to his powerful charisma. Everyone recalls his image, but none of his speeches. It was a marketing campaign, as a young man he was a great actor. The man was loved, his message ignored, because he proposed a relegation on issues such as divorce, abortion, contraception, AIDS, discrimination and homosexuality. People do not follow his teachings; I've never thought that he would have seen the collapse of capitalism.
NOTICIAS: what was his position towards the many cases of sexual abuse by churchmen?
YALLOP: paedophilia has been existing within the Church since the 2nd century. The first evidence dates back to year 147. There are no attempts to eradicate the problem. When they have evidence that a priest is a paedophile, they do not hand him over to the authorities, but they simply change his diocese so that he can continue to abuse children. When Wojtyla was bishop in Krakow, his attitude before any scandal was to hide it and he continued to do so. In 1984 he was handed over by Cardinal Krol, a North American good friend of his, a 200-page report analyzing abuses of the Church. He said that it was a good report but he filed it. He did the same with the financial scandals of Calvi in 80s.
NOTICIAS: are you already targeting Benedict XVI for another book?
YALLOP: Ratzinger is charismatic, but he is a bad actor. He classified Rock as an invention of the devil, while Wojtyla invited Bono and Bob Dylan to play for him. However he shares with Wojtyla the intention to cancel, for example, the theories of the Central American liberation. But that?s it for now, I need something lighter, maybe I will write some comedy.
NOTICIAS: Are you a believer?
YALLOP: I am Catholic, disappointed by the church. I come from a poor family, at the age of 15 I left school, university was a luxury that I could not afford. I studied in religious schools, but I do not have phobias, I can stay five minutes without thinking about the Catholic Church (smiling).
NOTICIAS: what does your wife do?
YALLOP: she works in Parliament, she is much more educated than me, she has university degrees and speaks several languages. She taught to violent young people or drug addicts or to youngsters under 15 who used to prostitute themselves. People around me seem to share my very sense of justice. One of my five children studied English and International Criminal Law at the University of Sussex and has mastered in the Rwandan genocide. He is 25 years old, one must have a great will for doing that.
NOTICIAS: Do you not fear the wrath of God?
YALLOP: Those of the Vatican should fear it!
