?I AM DESPERATE, YOU JUST NEEDED TO LOOK AT THE DATA, I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SAVE ONLY MY FAMILY?
L?AQUILA ? now everybody considers him like a Cassandra of 2009. Gioacchino Giampaolo Giuliani, 62 years old, technician at the laboratory of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Gran Sasso, would not have hoped for his ?prophecy? to come true. Yesterday he remained at home for a long time in Coppito, suburb of L?Aquila, distraught by his double anguish: both for the tragedy which struck his land and for the regret to not have been able to convince people. Later he went on the streets, showing his frustration. He bursts into tears in front of the cameras of the TV program ?Porta a Porta?, interviewed by Bruno Vespa: ?I knew everything and I could do nothing to prevent this disaster. I just saved my family, I could not save the others. I didn't know to whom I should have turned to?. On TV Giuliani recalled the emotional escalation that he lived on Sunday evening: ?At 6 p.m. I saw that there was a value of 2.7, the usual swarm... At 10 p.m. radon shot up. At 10:20 p.m. all stations gave values over 4. At midnight, desperate by that time, I took my family and brought them out?.
Now that the wreckage covers L?Aquila, Mr. Giuliani?s first target is Guido Bertolaso, Head of Civil Protection. ?Please go read what he dared to say about me, just few days ago. I was regarded as a fool, as one who enjoys spreading false alarms and hoaxes: this is what he said. Who has denigrated and underestimated my research, should now publicly apologize and carry on his conscience the burden of what happened?.
The system that Giuliani has been experimenting for years and according to which - he claims ? it is possible to predict earthquakes, consists in a ?earthquake precursor?, which analyzes the radon concentrations, a gas present underground. The final ?implementation? of his theory is a graph made two days ago. No one has deemed it enough to plan evacuation orders of the area which was hit on Sunday night. Not even the Institute where he works, which - a few days ago - issued a communiqu? to distance themselves from the ?prophecies? of Giuliani: ?His research is conducted for personal purposes. Hi is a non-graduate technical assistant at the Institute of Interplanetary Space Physics of Turin, who carries on his activity at the laboratories of Gran Sasso. This institution?s mission is not the study of earthquakes and other geophysics-related phenomena.
Ten days ago Giuliani was sued by the mayor of Sulmona to have alarmed the public. ?Actually I simply supplied data, without the intention to raise alarms. I would like to repeat it, there is nothing strange in my research. During the last ten years of study, through the ?earthquake precursor? we have found that the territory of L?Aquila is hit always in the same period by a seismic swarm not very intense and therefore generally not perceived by the population. This year it was more intense and with stronger shocks. That?s it. We were right then, we are right today?.
In the hours immediately before the tragedy, the researcher-Cassandra gave to the people closest to him an advice which, with hindsight, sounds unsettling. ?Dad advised not to sleep at L?Aquila tonight? Giuliani?s daughter said also to some of her friends. ?Please do not ask me why, my father can not say anything. But please believe him?. Few hours later, the earthquake struck. ?A tragic situation, not even during the bombing at war they faced such situations. An atrocious feeling. And for me - says the researcher ? there is also anger?.
Giuliani shares the view that an ?earthquake swarm? is not sufficient to foresee a destructive earthquake. ?But with my system, indeed you can know when an earthquake is near. The
?earthquake precursor? gives the chance to predict it with a margin between 6 and 24 hours, calculating epicentre, intensity and hypocentre. Why does science not admit it? I do not know. To those who did not believe me, I would only like to say that the dictionary of a scientist should not contain the word impossible.
