I DOVE INTO THE DYING OCEAN: PHILIPPE COUSTEAU JR.
Phillippe Cousteau Jr. (the ecologist grandson of Jacques Cousteau) dove into the water to show the effects of the 700,000 gallons of toxic dispersants BP continues to dump into the water despite EPA demands to stop. He gave his assessment of the Gulf of Mexico, where he has been working to help clean up the oil washing ashore from the the open offshore oil well. While he seemed confident that there was a way to fix the problem, he stressed that the ocean ecosystem will not fix itself.
Cousteau referred about the situation in Louisiana, where he had been working for the past weeks? his answer was not incredibly optimistic. He did have a direct answer for people who believe the ocean is strong and healthy enough to fix itself:
?I could cut my leg off, I could cut my arm off, I could gouge my eye out, I?d still probably survive, but not very well, and that?s what we?re doing to the ocean. It?s the life support system of this planet. We?ve been dumping in it, we?ve been polluting it, we?ve been destroying it for decades, and we?re essentially maiming ourselves? It?s not a question of whether the oceans can take anymore. The ocean can?t take any more. They couldn?t take any more fifty years ago. The question is, ?when are we going to stop???
Cousteau was also asked why many people seem to still support the oil industry despite the damage it continues to do in the Gulf, asking if they believe ?there is an App from Apple that will fix? the oil spill. Cousteau responded that there were many people in the Gulf still working for those companies, and as loyal employees, they have ?too much faith in big business, that they have our best interests at heart,? something that initially surprised him when he began to interact with residents.
The Earth is hemorrhaging a toxic flood of petroleum on an unprecedented scale. Even if it were to stop today, there?s no end in sight. This is not another Katrina; this is not even our Chernobyl, which was easier to grasp geographically and spiritually.
In honor and respect of the many innocent people whose lives may never be the same again, let us stop using words like ?spill? and ?leak.? It's far more tragic than that.
The day started early as we left New Orleans in the hot muggy morning light. The drive to Grand Isle takes about two hours, plenty of time to contemplate what I was about to see. It had been a week since I was last in Grand Isle and I had heard things were getting worse, but nothing could prepare me for what I was about to see.
Once we made it to the southern part of Louisiana, about an hour into the trip, we started to see signs advertising small shops closed due dwindling fish supplies and others pleading with the government and BP to help them feed their children. By the time we got to Grand Isle and met the team, there was a sense of frustration and anger that was palpable amongst the people milling about the marina.
We boarded the boat and headed out into Barataria Bay, the home of the most fertile oyster and shrimp and fishing grounds in the Gulf of Mexico, our destination was several small islands were birds congregate. As we pulled up to the shore we saw oily booms washed up on the beach and thick red oil covering the sand along the shoreline.
A few hundred yards down the shore a small heron was covered in reddish colored oil that was thicker than molasses. As soon as I looked at bird I knew she was waiting to die, shivering and too weak to stand. I knew this was just the beginning.
Further along we saw more birds whose normally bright white feathers were stained orange and knew it wouldn't be long for them either.
Soon a dark cloud rolled in above and we hurried back to the boat only to get caught moments later in a squall that threatened to flip the small boat that had ferried us to the island. A grueling ride back to port left us drenched in the oily water that splashed over the bow of the boat. As I jumped off the boat the taste of oil was still in my mouth and we wasted no time drying off. We didn't have much time before we had to drive back to New Orleans to fly to Florida so we hurried to interview several of the fishermen at the marina and headed to the main beach on the Gulf side of the island.
As soon as we arrived, I was greeted by a horrible sight: A beach covered in thick blotches of oil as far as the eye could see?and barely anyone on shore attempting to clean it up. Now I know why everyone was so frustrated: The oil had reached the beach which was bad enough but there seemed to be little effort to clean it. Soon two uniformed individuals asked us to leave the beach "for our own safety" and ushered us away but I knew I would be back within a week. From what I saw that day, things are going to get a lot worse before they get better.
MISTERIOUS UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT ORBITING AROUND THE SUN
ASTEROID 2010 KQ: PROBABLY A ROCKET BODY
A small asteroid-like object has been discovered in an orbit about the Sun that is so similar to the Earth's orbit that scientists strongly suspect it to be a rocket stage that escaped years ago from the Earth-Moon system. The object was discovered on May 16, 2010 by Richard Kowalski at the Catalina Sky Survey, and has subsequently been observed by many observers, including Bill Ryan (Magdalena Ridge Observatory) and Peter Birtwhistle (England). It was given the asteroid designation 2010 KQ by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge Massachusetts, who identified its orbit as being very similar to that of the Earth. Orbit refinements by JPL's Paul Chodas and amateur astronomer Bill Gray have shown that this object was very close to the Earth in early 1975, but the trajectory is not known with enough accuracy to associate the object with any particular launch. Nevertheless, scientists do not expect that a natural object could remain in this type of orbit for very long because of its relatively high impact probability with the Earth. In fact, an analysis carried out by Paul Chodas suggests that 2010 KQ has a 6% chance of impacting the Earth over a 30-year period starting in 2036.
Near-infrared spectral measurements of this object carried out by S.J. Bus (University of Hawaii) using the NASA IRTF telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, indicate that its spectral characteristics do not match those of any of the known asteroid types, and in fact are similar to those of a rocket body. The object's absolute magnitude (28.9) also suggests that it is only a few meters in size, about the size of a upper stage. Additional observations over the coming months should allow scientists to discern how strongly solar radiation pressure affects the object's motion, a result that could help distinguish a solid, rocky asteroid from a lighter man-made object.
Even in the unlikely event that this object is headed for impact with the Earth, whether it is an asteroid or rocket body, it is so small that it would disintegrate in the atmosphere and not cause harm on the ground.
