TESTIMONY OF A SOUL IN THE PATH OF YOGA

It was Easter 2007 when I met Giorgio Bongiovanni. My long Yoga practising let me reach a great inner peace, but I still felt something missing, the need to take action at the service of God: but how? Finally my master Paramahansa Yogananda took my hand and led me to a great soul in the service of Truth and Christic values without compromises, Giorgio Bongiovanni. I saw then the deeds of this man and his deep devotion to God by living the Gospel; I saw his social work, AntimafiaDuemila to fight the mafia and Funima International to help children. The work of Giorgio Bongiovanni is driven by an infinite love for the neighbour, a love that is however often not
understood by everyone, because it also takes the form of warning and complaint for those brothers who make mistakes towards themselves and the world.
The core of his message is the quest for the Kingdom of God in the heart, that manifests itself through altruism, equity, solidarity and thirst for justice... ("But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.?- Matthew 6:33).
During the last conference held in Floridia on September 4th 2011, someone asked Giorgio Bongiovanni: "What do you have in common with Yoga?". I have been practicing and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for years, so I think I can bring my testimony about it.
Ashtanga Yoga is a path of inner clarity whose purpose is to be honest with humility, first of all, towards ourselves.

The eight steps described in the sacred texts are the following:

1-YAMA, the first step, not because it is of lesser importance, but because it is the essential basic of everything: the ethical principles of non-physical or mental violence towards oneself and the others; altruism; the truth, that means the rejection of lies and falsehood even at the cost of being not highly regarded and welcome to the others; chastity, not only seen as sexual abstinence, but also as a disciplined sexual life that, rather than depriving us of vital energy, strengthens and amplifies it, leaving us in a state of fullness and union with the others; getting us free from any kind of attachment, i.e. from the instinct of the desire and material, emotional and intellectual possession that trap us in the karmic cycle of reincarnation.
2-NIYAMA: purity and cleanliness of the body, thoughts, surrounding environment and people around us; cultivating the ability to be satisfied and the happiness, a great help against desire, anger, envy, greed and ambition; the self-discipline and austerity, which require the will to purify mind and body; the study of oneself, and finally, the devotion to God that allows us to transcend ourselves. Niyama is therefore a behavioural code that strengthens the individual's behaviour, removes the inertia with a positive current that generates discipline and perseverance.
3-ASANA: Asanas are various static postures made through breathing, that help us generate energy, distribute it in the body and keep it, allowing then to reactivate the energetic points which had been blocked for a long time and then healing various diseases. Awareness, reflection, concentration, stillness, listening oneself must always accompany each movement, so that the benefits go from the physical to the spiritual body.
The next five steps are:
4 - PRANAYAMA, breath and flow of life control;
5 - PRATYAHARA, the retraction of the senses from sensible objects;
6 - DHARANA, concentration;
7 - DHYANA, meditation;
8 - SAMADHI, union with God, mystical ecstasy.

As the ancient practice teaches us, then, before getting to the positions of Hatha Yoga and, further on to meditation, one must be in the Truth with intentions and facts and this means having the courage of denouncing, in order not to be accomplices of bad values that ruin the Union with God. Meditation is not just isolating oneself to achieve peace, calmness and serenity, but it is also active meditation that means the state of being brought into action and serve God in full awareness. Prayer itself should also be manifested through action, not just recited ("Not everyone who says to me, ?Lord, Lord,? will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven" ? Matthew 7:21- 23). This is what the great masters have taught us: although they had already reached the Union with God and had fully experienced it in the conscious state of Samadhi, they have incarnated on this Earth to bring man the example, a message: the soul purifies and fortifies itself to prepare itself to come down to the world and work effectively for the values of the Spirit, such as Justice, Love and Truth with a sense of sacrifice and joy. In the Bhagavadg?t? Krishna does not say "practice six hours a day", but He says to be in Yoga, to be sat in Yoga and then fight, that is, acting! Being in Yoga means starting from the individual person to expand one?s individual consciousness in the collective consciousness, because the individual evolution helps the evolution of the community: How many devotees and practitioners of yoga are in the world? How many give completely themselves to serve Christ? How many teachers are in the world to teach theoretically these precepts? Many. And who puts into practice some of them? Few. And who puts them all in practice?
Now, that I know personally Giorgio Bongiovanni and I have been seeing him for years, I reply to the question that was made during the conference "What do you have in common with Yoga?", I reply: "Giorgio, you have all to do with yoga, no doubt, because you put it into practice every minute! "Although Giorgio does not practice traditional yoga, as teacher of yoga, I can testify that I saw Giorgio Bongiovanni implementing the eight steps described by Patanjali, up to Samadhi: I see him practicing it every day, to the point of giving his life, pointing the wicked with the lamp of the heart and his hands always firmly on the plough, announcing the coming of the Beloved Christ with His angels and preparing Him a path of Love and Justice. Even those who accompany him are like him, including many young people who have consciously chosen to give their life in serving the Mission, as great warriors of Light, always awake and ready.

Thanks to this meeting, my life as a man and teacher of Yoga has changed and today, together with my partner Licia and our two children, we are happy and have chosen to embrace the Mission giving all our lives to it and taking the path that Giorgio Bongiovanni, this great soul, has traced.

With love and devotion, I bow to all of you
